Drug: Gases, Glues and Aerosols

Aka: gases, thinners, volatile substances, glue, aerosols, solvents

What is it?

Gas lighter fluids, aerosol hairspray, deodorant and air freshener, tubes of glue, correcting fluid and thinners, cleaning fluids, petroleum products, etc.

How is it used?

Solvents are sniffed from a cloth, plastic bag or sleeve. Some put plastic bags over their heads and inhale. Gas products are squirted down the back of the throat.

What are the effects?

  • It can make you feel like you are drunk.
  • It makes you feel dizzy and can give you the giggles.
  • It can make you hallucinate, depending on what’s being sniffed.
  • It can make you have a huge headache and be sleepy afterwards.
  • It does not last long.

What are the risks?

  • It can make you sick and blackout.
  • It can cause heart problems and can be fatal.
  • If you squirt gas down the back of your throat, it can make your throat swell, so you can’t breathe, and your heart slows to dangerous levels.
  • You can suffocate.
  • It’s hard to get the amount right, and too much can be fatal or leave you in a coma.

The Law

Solvent abuse is not illegal. In England it is illegal for shopkeepers to sell intoxicating substances, if they think you are likely to be inhaling them. It is an offence for shopkeepers to sell gas lighter refills to anyone under 18.
