Drug: Khat

Aka: chat, quat, qat, qaadka

What is it?

Khat is a stimulant with similar effects to amphetamine and is a green leaf plant.

How is it used?

The leaf is chewed over a number of hours.

What are the effects?

  • It makes you feel alert and chatty.
  • It can suppress the appetite.
  • Although it’s a stimulant after hours of chewing it can make you feel calm.
  • You can become psychologically dependant on it.

What are the risks?

  • If you use it a lot in may cause sleep problems and insomnia, and sexual problems like impotence.
  • It can make you feel anxious and depressed.
  • Some people get irritable or angry and violent.
