Cocaine is a drug made from the coca plant. It is a white
powder with a bitter taste, and it dissolves in water. Cocaine
is a stimulant (upper). Stimulants act on the central nervous
system and increase activity in the brain.

How is it taken?
Cocaine is usually snorted up the nose and can be injected

It makes you feel wide-awake, confident.
You have a feeling of euphoria.
It raises your body temperature and reduces your appetite.
It last about 30 minutes.
What are the risks?
Like with most drugs, the feelings of well being soon wear off, and you
want to take more and more to get back those feelings.
Coke is psychologically very addictive.
The come down leaves you feeling anxious and depressed. Some
people may get panic attacks.
You may not be able to sleep.
It can be difficult to resist the intense craving, and you begin
to crave more and more.
If you use heavily, you can lack sexual desire.
If there is a history of mental illness, coke could bring these
illnesses out in you.
Long-term use can damage your nose.
You can overdose on coke.
Mixing substances is very dangerous and can be deadly. Dont
mix cocaine and heroin (speedball).
It will damage your finances.
Using cocaine and alcohol creates coca-ethylene and can be
dangerous.

Injecting
If you are injecting, there is a greater risk of overdosing, and
injecting brings on many other problems, e.g. blood borne viruses, vein
damage, ulcers and gangrene. If you use dirty needles, you are at risk
from HIV and hepatitis. If you share any injecting paraphernalia,
including spoons, water, filters, works and tourniquets, you are at high
risk of contracting hepatitis C. Use needle exchanges to get clean

Pregnancy
Using cocaine whilst pregnant can damage your baby. The placenta can
separate and bleed, you can have a miscarriage or your baby could be still
born. Cocaine can cause abnormalities in your baby. Babies can be born
prematurely and small and show withdrawal symptoms when born. Speak to
your midwife or GP if you have concerns.
How much is it?
It costs about £25 per half gram and about £40 per gram.
